How reviews work

Find out about the different kind of work we do.

We have four broad areas of work.

For each area of work you can look at short explanations, detailed guidance and supporting information.

Known as ‘Electoral Reviews’ these are the core of our work.

‘Principal Area Boundary Reviews’ happen when councils ask us to change their external boundaries.

‘Structural Reviews’ decide whether a single-tier council should replace a two-tier structure covering the same area. They are rare.

‘Community Governance Reviews’ are locally-led. Once complete, we may need to make changes to ward or electoral division boundaries.
