We review the electoral and boundary arrangements of councils to make sure they are fair. Our reviews include at least two rounds of public consultation before we make recommendations for change.   

15 October 2024 We decide how many councillors there should be
22 October 2024 - 20 January 2025 We carry out an initial public consultation with communities
3 June 2025 - 11 August 2025 We carry out a public consultation on our proposals
2 December 2025 We publish our recommendations
TBC We ask Parliament to approve our recommendations
2027 New arrangements apply to local elections

The creation of Somerset Council Unitary Authority

In March 2022, Parliament authorised the creation of a new unitary authority called Somerset Council. The council replaced the authorities of Somerset County Council, Mendip District Council, Sedgemoor District Council, Somerset West and Taunton Council and South Somerset Council.
